EDB delegation takes part in the Conference on Water Cooperation in Dushanbe
Almaty, 26 August 2013. Eurasian Development Bank’s (EDB) delegation headed by Sergey Shatalov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board, took part in the High-level International Conference on Water Cooperation in Dushanbe last week. This forum brought together over one thousand delegates from 73 countries and 60 international and regional institutions. It was conducted in accordance with the resolution of the UN General Assembly declaring 2013 the International Year of Water Cooperation.
The main objective of the conference was to contribute to improvement of water cooperation, in particular in a transboundary level, through advocating the successful policies and best practices as well as the dissemination of environmentally friendly technologies. International experience proves that only cooperative approach and integrated management of the use and protection of water resources can ensure their efficient use and alleviate tension around transboundary rivers.
The participants in the conference discussed the relationship between achieving sustainable development goals and strengthening water cooperation and developed recommendations as to how implement effective mechanisms for the use of the resources of transboundary rivers, lakes and water-bearing horizons.
The declaration adopted at the conference emphasises that “the cooperative development and management of transboundary water resources at the basin level is essential for broad-based sustainable social and economic growth, overall human development.”
EDB’s particular attention to the forum is explained by the fact that its strategies aim at addressing the issues of hydropower, environmental safety and environmental protection. The Bank is considering a number of investment projects in the water management and hydropower spheres in Central Asia, which can be fulfilled if regional cooperation is ensured.
During the conference the EDB delegation met with heads and members of delegations from Kazakhstan, Russia, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Tajikistan, Ukraine, Belarus, the EU and representatives of the UNECE, UNDP, WB, ADB, ESCAP, IFAS and the United Nations Centre for Preventive Diplomacy.
