EDB Gains Direct Access to China's Financial Market
Beijing, 22 June 2026 — The Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) has received a licence to operate on the China Interbank Bond Market (CIBM). The relevant information has been published on the official website of the People's Bank of China (PBOC).
The CIBM is one of the largest and most dynamic bond markets in the world. According to the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) and PBOC, the outstanding volume of bonds traded on the market exceeds 160 trillion yuan (approximately $22 trillion), making it the second-largest bond market globally, after the US market.
The licence allows the EDB to directly:
- Trade cash bonds — buying and selling government, corporate, and other securities;
- Conduct bond repurchase transactions (repo);
- Enter into derivative transactions.
"Obtaining the CIBM licence is an important step for the EDB. We are not only diversifying our securities portfolio and gaining a flexible instrument for managing yuan liquidity. It also opens up additional opportunities for financing the Bank's investment projects in yuan — especially in those countries and sectors where the Chinese currency is becoming increasingly significant. In essence, this is another bridge between our projects and one of the world's largest capital markets," noted Nikolai Podguzov, Chairman of the EDB Board.
