EDB starts a project to launch the first large wind power plant in Kazakhstan
Almaty, 17 October 2013. Last week the ceremony of laying a capsule to designate the launching of the project to construct a 45 MW wind power plant took place in the town of Yereimentau, Akmola Region, in Kazakhstan.
In the framework of this project, in April 2013 Eurasian Development Bank (EDB) provided a ten-year loan facility of KZT 14.2 billion (approximately US $94 million) to the First Wind Power Station LLP (a member of the Samruk Energy Group of Companies).
This innovative project will ensure the production of electric power in the amount of 172.2 GWh a year. This is planned to reduce the expected deficit of electricity in the region. In December 2012 it was included in the Regional Industrialisation Map.
“This is Kazakhstan’s first industrial project in the area of wind energy generation,” says Kanat Dosmukametov, Deputy Chairman of the Management Board at EDB. “It will contribute to the development of alternate energy in Kazakhstan based on renewable energy sources. This project is extremely relevant in the run up to the forthcoming EXPO 2017 exhibition, whose theme will be Future Energy.”
According to Mr Dosmukametov, the use of renewable sources in the electric power sector will help optimise the structure of generating facilities and, in particular, reduce the share of conventional sources. This will help save fuel and energy resources and minimise the adverse effect of the power sector on the environment through the reduction of pollutant and greenhouse gas emissions.
