Eurasian Development Bank and UN Economic Commission for Europe Published Outcomes of Joint Project

12 July 2011

Almaty, 12 July 2011. The UN European Commission for Europe (UNECE) published its Innovation Performance Review of Belarus with the financial and organisational support of the Eurasian Development Bank (EDB). This research is a result of a joint pilot project within the Bank’s Technical Assistance Fund.

The research was initiated at the request of the government of Belarus. The publication was prepared by a team of international and national experts under the general guidance and with the participation of the UNECE Secretariat. “To ensure integration with the global economy, the EDB member states should enhance their innovation capacity and master international experience of attracting quality foreign investments on favourable terms,” said Vladimir Yasinsky, Member of the EDB Executive Board and Managing Director of Research. “The results of this review will facilitate Belarus’ economic integration in the area of innovations.”

The work on the review began in June 2010. The main outcomes of this project, including its key conclusions and recommendations, were discussed during the substantive segment of the fifth session of the UNECE Committee on Economic Cooperation and Integration in December 2010. In the course of discussions, many participants have praised the results of this project and emphasised its relevancy and usefulness for the development of the respective political decisions.

The project has been highly evaluated by the government of Belarus. Its results are recommended to be widely used in the implementation of the country’s innovation policy.

Experience gained during the preparation of this review of Belarus made it possible to begin preparations for a similar project in Kazakhstan at the request of its government. The preliminary results of this research are expected to be discussed in December 2011.
